Facebook Camera. The End of Instagram?

Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Tech Thursday on Jabber Log! Many things have been going on within the social media world. Facebook has gone public with their IPO (Initial Public Offering) within the stock market, and bought the popular photo sharing app, Instagram. Facebook has done a lot for the social media community, however, they fell flat on their first day of trading. Facebook’s stock continues to drop but they still have a lot to work with. According to Mashable.com, “Facebook has released an iOS app that looks and functions almost identically to Instagram’s.” Interesting isn’t it? Instagram has been doing phenomenal since it hit Apple’s App Store, but almost two month’s ago, Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion dollars. So what does that mean for one of the top photo sharing apps? Well, that means that Facebook is now allowed to duplicate the app without being sued. The app is called, Facebook Camera and so far it’s only for iOS and is almost identical to Instagram but with a Facebook feel to it.

“Like Instagram, your friends’ latest photos are displayed in a single scrolling feed. You can also now simultaneously upload multiple photos to Facebook; Facebook’s main app only allows you to upload photos one at a time. And like Instagram, the app allows you to crop, rotate and apply filters to your photos,” says Mashable.com. Using the app myself, I can see how others see it as more efficient. Facebook has so many features within it’s main site, that it’s only logical for them to break up their services into separate apps. So what does this mean for Instagram? Will this app continue to thrive or will Facebook slowly do away with it? It will all depend on how it’s embraced by Facebook’s users. I have not seen the ability to share an image on Facebook Camera with Twitter or Tumblr like Instagram. If they happen to add more ways to share with competing social networks then I smell the death of Instagram. It’ll be a sad day when and if that happens but for those who would like to try out Facebook Camera on iOS, you can click here. It is unknown when it will come out for Android but I’m sure it’s not too far away. Have a good one folks, photo share it up, and thanks for reading. Cheers!
